How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

To receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit, come to Jesus in faith, ask the Father for His promise, surrender yourself fully, receive rather than strive, and yield your voice and life to the Holy Spirit. You do not earn the Spirit through perfection or emotion. You receive God's gift through trusting surrender.

"For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence."
-- Acts 1:5 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to disciples who already believed in Him. He told them to wait for something more: power from on high.

Jesus Is the One Who Baptizes in the Holy Spirit

John the Baptist distinguished his water baptism from the greater ministry of Jesus:

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:"
-- Matthew 3:11 (KJV)

The word baptize carries the picture of immersion. Water surrounds a person in water baptism. In Holy Spirit baptism, Jesus immerses the believer in the presence and power of the Spirit. The focus is not a human technique. The focus is Jesus, the Baptizer.

John G. Lake wrote in The Baptism of the Holy Ghost, Part 1, "The Baptism of the Holy Ghost is peculiar to the Lord Jesus Christ." This keeps the experience personal and Christ-centered. We do not chase power apart from Jesus. We receive from Jesus so that His life can be revealed through us.

What Happened at Pentecost?

After Jesus rose from the dead, He commanded His followers to remain in Jerusalem until the promised Spirit came:

"And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high."
-- Luke 24:49 (KJV)
"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
-- Acts 2:1-4 (KJV)

Pentecost was not merely an emotional meeting. The promised Spirit came upon ordinary believers, filled them, and enabled them to speak as He gave utterance. Fearful disciples became public witnesses of the risen Christ.

What Is the Purpose of Holy Spirit Baptism?

Jesus gave the clearest purpose statement:

"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
-- Acts 1:8 (KJV)

The Spirit's power is given so believers can represent Jesus. It produces boldness to testify, strength to obey, spiritual gifts to serve, and dependence on God rather than human ability.

D. L. Moody wrote in Secret Power, "There is no use in running before you are sent; there is no use in attempting to do God's work without God's power." Holy Spirit baptism is not spiritual decoration. It equips the church for its mission.

Is This the Same as Salvation?

Every person who belongs to Christ has the Holy Spirit. No Christian is spiritually alive without His work. Scripture says all believers are brought into Christ's body by one Spirit:

"For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit."
-- 1 Corinthians 12:13 (KJV)

Yet Acts also describes believers receiving the Spirit's empowering presence after they had believed. In Samaria, people received the Word and were baptized in water before Peter and John prayed for them:

"Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost."
-- Acts 8:14-17 (KJV)

Christians use different language to explain these passages. Some call this a distinct baptism after conversion. Others emphasize repeated fillings of the Spirit. The essential truth is shared: every believer needs the Holy Spirit, and no believer should try to live or serve in merely human strength.

If you have not received Christ, begin with this guide to giving your life to Jesus. Salvation is not replaced by a spiritual experience.

Is This the Same as Water Baptism?

No. Water baptism is a physical act of obedience that publicly identifies a believer with Jesus. Holy Spirit baptism is Jesus filling and empowering the believer by the Spirit. Both appear in the New Testament, but they are not interchangeable.

Must Everyone Speak in Tongues?

At Pentecost, believers spoke with other tongues. Acts 19 also records tongues and prophecy when the Spirit came upon disciples:

"And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied."
-- Acts 19:6 (KJV)

Many Pentecostal and charismatic Christians understand tongues as the initial evidence of Holy Spirit baptism. Other Spirit-filled Christians believe tongues is common but not required as universal proof. This article does not need to settle every denominational difference. It should make us hungry for everything Scripture promises while keeping Jesus, love, holiness, and witness at the center.

What Evidence Should Follow?

Spiritual gifts matter, but so does spiritual fruit. Power without Christlike character misrepresents the One who gives the power.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
-- Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

Look for increasing love for Jesus, boldness to witness, hunger for Scripture and prayer, sensitivity to sin, willingness to serve, spiritual gifts, and love for people. Lake wrote, "God comes to present you with HIMSELF." The greatest gift is not a dramatic moment but God filling a surrendered life.

Is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit for Today?

Peter announced that the promise extended beyond the people standing at Pentecost:

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call."
-- Acts 2:38-39 (KJV)

The Holy Spirit has not become less necessary. The church still needs power to witness, courage to obey, gifts to serve, and lives filled with Jesus. Paul commanded believers, "be filled with the Spirit," presenting Spirit-filled life as an ongoing necessity.

"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;"
-- Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)

How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

1. Make Sure You Have Received Jesus

The Holy Spirit baptism is God's promise to believers. If you have not trusted Christ, begin with this simple guide to giving your life to Jesus. Come to Christ honestly, receive His forgiveness, and become part of His family.

2. Believe the Promise Is for You

Acts 2:39 extends the promise to all whom the Lord calls. Refuse the idea that the Spirit is only for unusually spiritual people. Jesus is the Baptizer, and He is generous.

3. Surrender What You Are Holding Back

Yield your plans, reputation, habits, fears, and desire to control the experience. John G. Lake wrote in The Baptism of the Holy Ghost, Part 2, "The Baptism of the Holy Ghost is not an influence, nor yet a good feeling, nor sweet sensations." You are welcoming a Person, not chasing a sensation.

4. Ask the Father in Faith

Speak plainly: "Father, baptize me in the Holy Spirit." Thank Him that His promise is good. Do not measure God's willingness by the intensity of your feelings.

5. Receive and Yield

Quiet your striving and receive. If words or sounds you did not plan rise within you, yield your voice to the Spirit. He gives utterance, but you cooperate by speaking. Do not manufacture, imitate, or fear. Keep your attention on Jesus.

6. Continue in Faith

Some receive with a dramatic awareness; others recognize the Spirit's work more quietly or over time. Continue asking, worshipping, and yielding without condemnation. Seek prayer from mature Spirit-filled believers if helpful.

A Prayer to Receive

Father, I come through Jesus Christ. Thank You that the Holy Spirit is Your promise to me. I surrender my whole life, including every fear and desire to control. Jesus, baptize me in the Holy Spirit. I receive by faith. Holy Spirit, fill me, give me power to witness, form Christ in me, and release every gift You desire. I yield my mind, body, and voice to You. I will follow Your leading and give Jesus all the glory. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Come to Jesus in faith, believe the Father's promise is for you, surrender your whole life, ask to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, and receive rather than strive. Yield to the Spirit's leading and continue in faith without condemnation.

Do I need to be perfect before receiving the Holy Spirit?

No. You do not earn the Holy Spirit through perfection. Come honestly through Jesus, confess known sin, and yield yourself to God. Surrender means giving Him access to your life, not making yourself flawless before He will help you.

Will I speak in tongues when I receive?

Acts records believers speaking in tongues when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Pentecostal Christians expect tongues as initial evidence, while other Spirit-filled Christians explain the evidence differently. Do not manufacture or imitate. Yield your voice to the Spirit while keeping your attention on Jesus.

What if I prayed but did not feel anything?

Do not measure God's faithfulness by a feeling. Continue thanking Him, worshipping, surrendering, and asking in faith. Some people receive with a dramatic awareness, while others recognize the Spirit's work more quietly or over time. Seek prayer from mature Spirit-filled believers if helpful.

Can someone pray for me to receive the Holy Spirit?

Yes. Acts records believers receiving as other Christians prayed and laid hands on them. Another believer does not control the gift, because Jesus is the Baptizer, but loving agreement and biblical instruction can help you receive with faith and understanding.
